Hiraeth is a Welsh word that has no direct English translation. It's something like homesickness tinged with grief and sadness over the lost or departed, especially in the context of Wales and Welsh culture. It is a mixture of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness or an earnest desire for the Wales of the past.
I took inspiration from this word after thinking back on my time in University in Cardiff, Wales. After spending three years in Wales, drinking in life and culture, the pieces that stuck to my soul are sometimes reflected on the canvas.
